[ in the background, there's the sounds of nature. rustling leaves, rushing water, chirping birds... and then there's a quiet chuckle from the owner of the journal. ]

This is quite the place. I've seen a lot in my time, but nothing like this. And that guide is handy! [ there's another small laugh ] Very thorough in its explaining this place. My thanks to its maintainer.

[ shanks pauses and there's the sounds of splashing. he's kicking his feet in the river. ]

If this place gets new arrivals in cycles, I imagine you get a number of these "I'm new here," journal entries. Aaah, well, that won't do. Let's spice things up and give you something more interesting than that!

Stop me if you've heard this one before... A Marine officer falls overboard during a battle with some pirates. He's a Devil Fruit user, so he can't swim and has to be rescued by a deckhand. When he's back aboard his ship, he thanks the deckhand and asks how he can best repay his underling for saving his life. The deckhand looks sheepish as he replies. "I think the best reward would be keeping it a secret, sir," he says, "If the other fellows knew I pulled you out, they might push me in!" Dahahahaha!

She knows she's heard it before, especially the laugh, but...ugh, she just can't think of who it may be, and that's driving her nuts. So Norma grumbles and tries peering closer into her journal's camera after flipping on the video.

My favorite drink is sake from my hometown, but I'll drink just about anything.

Well, I dunno if it's from your hometown, but I'm pretty sure we've got some of that sake stuff there somewhere. I definitely remember seeing a few bottles when I was working. It doesn't get ordered too often...at least from my experiences.

I'd say everyone that doesn't drink it is missing out, and they are, but I can't be too sad about it. It means more for me.

[Norma just laughs. Shanks, you are so open about your alcoholism...but at least you're fun, and good for a laugh.] I've never really liked that strong stuff, but maybe you can convince me to try a teensy bit. Don't clean us out or anything! We can't restock that quick, and I'm pretty sure we don't wanna scrape you off the floor or anything, either.

[Norma puts a hand to her chest, setting up the dramatics. She doesn't get to do this nearly enough, and it's loads of fun.]

Jeez, I do that enough when I'm babysitting Fifi! That kid is like a hurricane when she wants to be. It's gonna be the worst once she gets her teriques, too.

[Though once that happens and if they're large enough to support actual flight, Norma will have to trade her off to Walter or Fenimore.]

Teriques?

Yeah, they're like w--uuuuh...hold on. [Throwing up a quick filter because Norma knows how moody her housemates can be if their culture and secrets are broadcast to everyone ever.] There, okay.

Directly translated from the language they stem from, teriques means "wings of the beginning", but what they really are are like...hm. Kinda like a person--a Ferines' - a person of the water from where I'm from - soul. It's a manifestation of their soul into solid form, usually taking the form of wings of some sort. Or creatures that have wings. They can be really big or kinda small sometimes, and they can even attack for their master and sustain flight.

According to what I read way back when, I think once a Ferines is able to project their teriques, they've like...uh...become an adult or something? I can't really remember it all.

That sounds interesting. I've never heard of anything like it before.

That's just how my world is, though I'm not sure if Fifi will be able to really do all that. She's only half Ferines - her dad was an Orerines, a person of the land, like I am.
